The Challenge

Many in the Salty Snack Industry must continue to meet customer demand while pursuing cost-effective growth by automating processes. “Our automation projects and capital improvements increased our capacity and delivered significant productivity increases, yet our up-time and labor savings were still not maximized,” said a 28-year veteran plant manager of a growing kettle-cooked chip processor in the Northeast. “We needed to find a solution to achieve maximum savings.”

In order to extract optimal productivity, a solution was needed to allow the company to quickly clean and sanitize a multitude of scale buckets and associated weigh system components.

The Solution

A Sani-Cab cabinet washer equipped with custom-designed racks for the manufacturer’s array of four different bucket sizes and associated components allowed them on average to achieve a 50% reduction in sanitation time and 65% redirection of labor. The PLC controlled system provided them the flexibility to utilize a 10-minute wash cycle for the un-seasoned lines and a 20-minute cycle for the seasoning lines. The longer cycle ensures that the mildly allergenic seasoning residues are completely removed, while a shorter cycle is used whenever possible to save time and resources.

“The Sani-Cab was very easy to integrate into our production environment,” said the Plant Manager. “The simple, clean, high quality design does exactly what it’s supposed to do; safely and effectively clean our valuable equipment. The Sani-Cab implementation easily met our goal of a two-year payback in redirected labor savings alone, even without considering the increased productivity of the facility.” On average, the Sani-Cab saved the three shift operation more than 40 man-hours per week and increased production up-time by more than eight hours per week. Cleaning is now dependable, efficient and conserves resources, using only 17 gallons of water per wash cycle. Clearly, the Sani-Cab met and exceeded all of the manufacturer’s expectations.
